Where to Study BIT in Nepal: All Routes Compared

BIT in Nepal comes from three places: Tribhuvan University, Purbanchal University, or a Nepali college teaching a foreign university's IT degree under Ministry of Education approval. Which one you can realistically enter depends far less on which is "best" and far more on arithmetic. TU runs the cheapest BIT in the country and also the hardest one to enter, because there are only about 216 seats across the Kathmandu Valley and more than two thousand candidates sitting the entrance exam for them. Purbanchal opens up a lot more private seats. Foreign-affiliated colleges skip the national entrance queue entirely.

So the honest answer to "where should I study BIT in Nepal" starts with a different question: what does your +2 result actually let you do, and how much can your family spend over four years?

This guide walks through all three routes, the seat and fee reality behind each, and what changes if you widen the search from BIT specifically to IT in general.

Across all universities, roughly 39 colleges in Nepal offer some form of BIT. That number sounds generous until you break it down by route.

Route 1: BIT under Tribhuvan University

TU introduced BIT in 2076 BS through the Institute of Science and Technology, and it remains the cheapest recognised IT bachelor's in the country. That is exactly why it is so hard to get.

Who can apply. You need twelve years of schooling from any stream, with English and either Mathematics or Computer studied as 100-mark subjects in Grade 11 and 12. TU asks for at least a C grade in English and in your chosen Maths or Computer subject, passing grades elsewhere, a minimum GPA of 1.6, and a final CGPA of at least 1.8. Second division overall is the floor.

The entrance. IOST conducts a 100-mark multiple choice paper. English carries 50 marks and Mathematics or Computer carries the other 50, drawn from the Grade 11 and 12 syllabus. You need 35% to pass. Passing, however, is not the same as getting in.

The seat problem. In the Kathmandu Valley, TU BIT is offered at Patan Multiple Campus (72 seats), Bhaktapur Multiple Campus (72 seats), Amrit Science Campus (36 seats) and Padma Kanya Multiple Campus (36 seats). That is 216 seats. In a recent cycle, over two thousand students sat the entrance in the Valley alone. Do the division and you get a success rate somewhere near one in ten, and the students who convert are clustered at the top of the merit list.

This is the single most important fact in the whole BIT decision, and most college websites will not tell you plainly. If you are aiming at TU BIT in Kathmandu, you are not competing for a place. You are competing for a rank.

Where TU BIT makes sense. If you scored well in +2, you are comfortable with an entrance exam format, you can wait through the full merit list and re-priority cycle, and cost is your binding constraint, TU is the strongest value in Nepal. Nothing else comes close on fee per year of a nationally recognised degree.

Where it does not. If your +2 grades are mid-range, or you cannot afford to lose a year waiting for the next cycle, treating TU BIT as your only plan is a risk. Have a second route ready before results day, not after.

Route 2: BIT under Purbanchal University

Purbanchal was the first Nepali university to run BIT, and it still carries the widest college network. Around 31 institutions offer PU BIT, with about 15 of those inside Kathmandu district.

The programme runs four years across eight semesters, totalling 140 credit hours. Eligibility is generally +2 with Mathematics, a CGPA of 2.0 or 45% with no grade below D+ from a recognised board. Colleges run a PU entrance and then admit from a merit list, so there is still a filter, but the seat pressure is nothing like TU's.

Fees sit roughly between NPR 3 and 7 lakh for the full programme, and that range is wide for a reason. PU affiliates a lot of private colleges, and the difference between the best and the weakest of them is larger than the difference between universities. Two colleges can hand you the same PU transcript after four very different educations.

If you go this route, judge the college, not the university. Ask for the lab-to-student ratio. Ask how many full-time faculty teach the core programming and networking courses versus visiting lecturers. Ask what percentage of last year's graduating batch completed an internship, and where. A college that cannot answer those three questions quickly is telling you something.

Route 3: Foreign-affiliated BIT in Nepal

The third route is a Nepali college delivering a foreign university's IT degree on campus in Kathmandu, with Ministry of Education approval and TU equivalence.

This is where the students who missed the TU merit list usually end up, and it has become a legitimate first choice rather than a fallback. The reasons are practical.

There is no national entrance queue. Admission runs on your +2 result plus a college-level assessment or interview, which means you can enrol in the same season your results come out instead of waiting for a merit list that may not reach your rank.

Stream restrictions are looser. TU BIT requires you to have carried Maths or Computer as a 100-mark subject. Several foreign-affiliated programmes admit students who did neither, which matters enormously if you took a Management +2 without Maths and later decided you want to work in tech.

The curriculum updates faster. Nepali university syllabi are revised on a multi-year cycle. Partner universities abroad typically revise theirs more often, which is why you see artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT and big data analytics appearing as taught modules in foreign-affiliated IT degrees before they show up in national curricula.

The trade-off is cost and paperwork. Foreign-affiliated programmes generally cost more than a government campus, and you should confirm two things before you pay anything: that the partner university appears on the Ministry of Education's approved list, and that TU's Curriculum Development Centre grants equivalence to that specific degree. Ask the college to show you the approval reference in writing. A college that is properly approved will hand it over without hesitating.

Padmashree College's BIT, for example, runs under Nilai University, Malaysia, which carries MoE approval and TU equivalence. It is a 126 credit-hour programme spread across nine semesters in four years, with a six-credit internship built into the final semester, and it accepts Grade XII or A-Level students with a minimum of 45% in two subjects, without requiring a Science or Mathematics background.

Where to study IT in Nepal, if BIT is not the answer

A lot of people searching for BIT actually want a career in IT and have not yet decided which degree gets them there. Widening the question changes the answer, so it is worth laying the options out side by side.

BSc CSIT (TU) is the most computer-science-heavy option, with strong mathematics and theory. It is offered through more than fifty TU-affiliated colleges, so seat availability is better than BIT, but it demands +2 Science with Physics and Maths. Choose it if you enjoy maths and want research or deep systems work.

BCA (TU) is application-focused: programming, databases, web and mobile development, project work. It has an entrance exam, and individual colleges run fixed seat counts, typically around 35 per intake. It admits students from any stream. Choose it if you want to build software and prefer applied coursework to theory.

BIT sits between the two. Less mathematics than CSIT, more networking, information security and management information systems than BCA. It suits students who want to work in IT infrastructure, systems administration, security or IT management as much as in pure development.

BIM (TU) blends IT with management and finance. Choose it if you see yourself in business analysis, ERP, fintech or IT project management rather than hands-on engineering.

BE Computer / BE Software is engineering, five years at some institutions, entrance-heavy, and maths-intensive. Choose it if you want to be an engineer by title and are prepared for the workload.

For a +2 Management graduate with no Maths, the realistic IT routes are BIT, BCA and BIM. CSIT and BE are effectively closed. That single fact resolves most of the confusion people have when they start searching.

How to actually choose

Work through this in order, and the decision usually makes itself.

Start with your eligibility, not your preference. Pull out your +2 transcript. Check whether you carried English plus Maths or Computer as 100-mark subjects. Check your GPA against the TU floor. If you do not clear TU's bar, the TU route is closed and there is no point agonising over it.

Then check the calendar. TU's entrance, merit list, priority and admission cycle runs for months. If you cannot afford a gap year in the event you miss the list, you need a parallel application at a college with rolling admission.

Then set a real fee ceiling. Add tuition, exam fees, and the cost of getting to campus daily for four years. A college that is 40 minutes further away costs you roughly 800 hours of travel across a degree. That is not nothing.

Then judge the college on evidence, not adjectives. Every college website in Nepal calls itself the best. Ignore the adjectives and ask for numbers: internship completion rate, full-time faculty count, lab equipment age, and what the last three graduating batches are doing now. Colleges that track their alumni will tell you. Colleges that do not will change the subject.

Then visit. Sit in on a class if they will let you. Talk to a second or third-year student without a staff member present. Fifteen minutes on campus tells you more than fifteen websites.

Studying BIT at Padmashree, Tinkune

Padmashree College has been running IT, hospitality, food science and business programmes from Tinkune since 2007. The BIT is delivered under Nilai University, Malaysia, with MoE approval and TU equivalence, so there is no IOST entrance to clear and no waiting on a national merit list.

The curriculum covers the standard IT core of programming, networking, database management and software architecture, and extends into artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT and big data analytics. The final semester carries a six-credit internship, which means students finish the degree with documented industry work rather than only coursework.

Tinkune helps more than it sounds. The campus sits on Raja Janak Marg, minutes from Koteshwor, close to the airport and on the main Ring Road transport spine, which puts it within a reasonable commute from most of the eastern Valley.
